New Compact – Canon Ixus 970 IS
by Tucker Photography on May.25, 2009, under Products
On a recent trip to Newquay, Cornwall for a friends stag do I found myself without my trusty Canon 40D and as I walked past a Curries Digital store I decided it was time for the purchase of a new compact camera. Intent upon sticking loyal to the canon brands I browsed what was on offer whilst attempting to keep a reasonable budget. I spotted the Ixus 970 IS priced up for a very reasonable £169.99, not one to purchase without doing at least a little research we headed to the pub for a pint and I took the opportunity to check out the price and review of the 970. Surprisingly the usual internet retailers were selling the camera upwards of £230 so I decided to grab the bargain and buy the camera. After a week of use I can say that the camera has lived up to my expectations and I have come to use the Isux 970 more than I anticipated. As with every compact you will never have the control and capabilities of an SLR but the compact has some nifty little features which make it an essential piece of my kit back now. Firstly the face detection is fantastic, I have used it on a number of occasions in various different lighting conditions and it has been pretty responsive all round. The image stabilisation is fair for a compact camera of this cost. Features wise it is jam packed and I often find myself a little over whelmed but there is alot to be said for the range of controls this camera offers. Technical Details:
- Exclusive Digital IXUS design with Multi Control Dial
- 10.0 Megapixels
- Canon 5x optical zoom with enhanced optical Image Stabilizer (IS)
- Motion Detection Technology, High ISO Auto and IS for the total anti-blur solution

- Red-Eye Correction in shooting and playback
- Fast response times and superb image quality with renowned DIGIC III and iSAPS technology
- 2.5″ high resolution PureColor LCD II and optical viewfinder

|---|---|
| Good value for money, light weight, compact and packed with features | Battery life could be a little better, no Raw format option, menu system can be confusing and takes some getting used to |
